As noted by Disney, the plot of Encanto is described as:

“Encanto” by Walt Disney Animation Studios tells the story of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the Colombian mountains, in a magical house, in a bustling city, in a wonderful and enchanted place called Encanto. The magic of the Encanto blessed each child in the family with a unique gift ranging from super strength to healing power – all but one child, Mirabel (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz). But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

Encanto begins to really touch the hearts of viewers who see the film, especially those who come from a large family. More recently, Nathan Player spoke about his experience watching the film at KSL. The father of four said:

“As someone from a large family, I often felt like Mirabel,” Player said. “My older siblings had all of this success, and I was in awe and terrified that I would never measure up.”

Similar to Bruno, Player felt touched by the idea of a character turned “mean” in his own family for choosing a different path in life.

“In families, we sometimes exclude those who choose differently and don’t take the time to let them express themselves or look at things from another angle. As a conditioned military officer and family man, I often feel the pressure to be the strongest in the family. I get turned to when people need help, and I can’t drop the ball. It can be overwhelming. Luisa’s character showed that it’s also important to show your weaknesses and ask for help.

Chelsea Williams, another parent, noted that the film was actually “trigger”. Williams noted:

“Encanto was a really triggering movie for me. I grew up in a society where there were a lot of expectations of who we were meant to be. My parents were really good at trying to relieve those pressures, but I didn’t didn’t do everything as planned and felt like Mirabel, whose grandma blamed all the cracks in the house Grandma knew Mirabel was right about the cracks in the house and always said Mirabel was crazy and blamed her.

Encanto shows a very dysfunctional family, which a lot of people can relate to, and now it seems like parents are watching the movie and connecting it to their lives, and wondering how they can improve their experiences with their kids the way they are now growing up in his own family.

Disney goes on to describe the film as follows:

Released November 24, 2021, the film features brand new songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton,” “Moana”) and is directed by Byron Howard (“Zootopia,” “Tangled”) and Jared Bush (co-director “ Zootopia”), co-directed by Charise Castro Smith (“The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez” screenwriter), and produced by Clark Spencer and Yvett Merino; Bush and Castro Smith are the screenwriters for the film.
